On September 2018 Ecorys, in consortium with Pescares Italia and Stratégies Mer et Littorel, was awarded by EASME with the contract “Assistance Mechanism for the western Mediterranean: Set up and elaboration of an Assistance Mechanism for the western Mediterranean sea basin”.
The project will run until September 2020 and builds on the successful experience of the WestMed Initiative, where the European Union, EASME and the ten states in the western Mediterranean basin explored the potential for Blue Economy investments. The aim is to support the WestMED Steering Committee in the Framework for Action established by the European Union. By providing practical guidance on funding opportunities, investments, project set-up and development, the new WestMED Assistance Mechanism will be a fundamental contribution to enhance a comprehensive Blue Economy vision for the western Mediterranean sea basin.
Building and reinforcing an informed stakeholder community, including investors, authorities and civil society is the priority to ensure a sustainable Blue growth in the next future. Therefore, different streams form the backbone of the Assistance mechanism, with a strong focus on providing practical guidance and monitoring of funding opportunities, stakeholder engagement and communication. The research and outreach efforts will encompass not only the international and institutional level, but will also develop through the support of National Hubs and roadshows at the national level.
Ecorys will lead the project, by ensuring the overall coordination, the set-up of the National Hubs of experts and the support to project development. Moreover, Ecorys will put emphasis on communication, events, networking and matchmaking between all the relevant stakeholders. A comprehensive, well-balanced effort towards a more sustainable Blue Economy growth.
